Saanich covers much of the Saanich Peninsula on southern Vancouver Island, just north of Victoria. From above it has no single centre. Curving suburban crescents fill the south and grow sparser further north, giving way to farm fields, wooded ridges and scattered lakes. The coast runs along the eastern side, where roads follow the shoreline and residential lanes climb the slopes behind it.
Several features stand out on the map. Mount Douglas rises as a forested block near the shore, with a road spiralling up to its summit. Elk Lake and Beaver Lake sit together in the middle of the district, and Highway 17 runs north past them towards the ferry terminal and the airport. In the south, the University of Victoria campus shows up as a neat circle of buildings inside its ring road.
By population, Saanich is the largest municipality in Greater Victoria, yet a large part of its land is still agricultural or protected.
