Fengjia lies in the mountainous southeast of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep ridges, narrow valleys and winding roads. Here flat land is scarce, and the town's shape on a map follows the terrain closely: streets run along the lower ground, bend with the contours and stop where the slopes become too steep to build on. The result is an organic footprint rather than a grid.
Around the town, roads switch back up hillsides and follow streams between the ridges, linking scattered villages and farmland. On a monochrome poster these winding lines stand out sharply against the empty space of the mountains, and the density of the town centre contrasts with the thin threads of road that reach out from it in several directions.
