Ganning lies in the mountainous north-east of Chongqing, a region of steep ridges, narrow valleys and terraced slopes above the Yangtze basin. In country like this, a town cannot spread evenly. Its streets follow the valley floor and wrap around the lower slopes, and the map records that constraint clearly: built areas where the ground allows them, open hillside where it does not.
The result is an irregular, linear shape rather than a compact grid. Main roads bend with the terrain, smaller lanes climb away from them, and the edges of the town dissolve into fields and slopes. Around it, rural roads wind across the hills to scattered villages, drawing loose, looping lines between the ridges.
