El mapa
Ikeda sits where the Osaka plain meets the hills of the north. On a map the older town gathers around Ikeda Station on the Hankyu line. The Ina River forms the western boundary with Hyogo prefecture. North of the centre the streets start to climb, and the wooded slopes of Satsukiyama rise directly behind the town.
The city is best known as the place where Momofuku Ando developed instant ramen in 1958. The Cupnoodles Museum here marks that history. Ikeda was also an old castle town and market centre, and its layout still shows a compact core of narrow streets. South of the centre, the long runways of Osaka International Airport stretch across the city boundary.
An Ikeda map poster frames all of that in one sheet. There is the fine suburban grid, the river curving along the west, the hills closing off the north and the straight lines of the airport to the south. In monochrome the contrasts are sharp: dense housing, open slopes and one large geometric void.
Wooded hills rise immediately north of the centre. On the map, streets end and open ground begins in a clean line.
The river runs along the western edge and marks the prefectural border with Hyogo. It is the main curved line on the poster.
The long straight runways of Itami Airport cut across the southern part of the map, a large geometric shape beside the residential blocks.
