Itami lies in south-eastern Hyōgo Prefecture, between Osaka and Kobe, on flat land framed by the Ina River to the east and the Muko River to the west. It is part of the continuous urban area of Kansai, so its streets merge into neighbouring cities, but the two rivers give its map clear natural edges.
The most prominent feature is Osaka International Airport, widely known as Itami Airport, whose runways extend across the south-east of the city and into neighbouring Toyonaka and Ikeda. Near the centre lies Koya Pond, a large irrigation pond that has become a park and bird habitat, and the ruins of Arioka Castle stand beside the main railway station.
Itami is regarded as one of the birthplaces of Japanese sake brewing, and breweries have operated here for centuries.
