Inazawa lies in western Aichi Prefecture on the Nōbi Plain, one of the largest flat areas in Japan, between Nagoya and Ichinomiya. From above it looks less like a single centre than a mosaic. Residential streets, small factories, rice fields and plant nurseries interlock across the level ground, and railway lines and roads draw long straight strokes through the pattern.
The city is known for the Hadaka Matsuri, the naked festival held each winter at Owari Ōkunitama Shrine. Thousands of men in loincloths push toward a chosen man who is said to carry away misfortune. Inazawa is also known for the ginkgo trees of the Sobue district, grown for their nuts, and for a long tradition of horticulture and nursery stock that shows in its patchwork of fields.
