El mapa
Kageleke lies in the south of Xinjiang, in the Hotan area, on the belt of oases along the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert. Water here comes from rivers fed by snow and ice in the Kunlun Mountains, and every settlement depends on the irrigation that spreads from them. From above, the town is a green island of streets and fields in a pale, dry landscape.
The settlement pattern follows the water. Canals and tree-lined roads divide the land into long, narrow fields. Houses gather along these lines in extended villages rather than a single compact centre. Beyond the last irrigated plots the land turns abruptly to desert, giving the map a sharp, clear boundary.
A Kageleke map poster captures this contrast between irrigated land and desert. The orderly grid of fields, canals and roads looks especially fine in Blueprint, where it resembles an engineering plan. Sand echoes the warm colours of the gravel plains and dunes that surround the oasis.
Channels carrying water from the Kunlun rivers run through the fields in long straight lines and form the main structure of the map.
Houses line the roads and canals in long ribbons, creating a pattern of extended settlements rather than one dense town centre.
Where irrigation ends, the fields give way to open desert, drawing a sharp and dramatic line around the edge of the oasis.
