El mapa
Lüneburg grew rich on salt. For centuries, brine from beneath the town was boiled into salt and shipped along the Ilmenau and on to Lübeck, and that trade made Lüneburg one of the wealthiest members of the Hanseatic League. The prosperity is still visible in the brick Gothic gables around its squares and in the compact shape of its old town.
On the map, the historic centre is a dense oval of lanes between the Ilmenau and the former salt works. Two large squares mark it, the long Am Sande and the Marktplatz beside the town hall. By the river, the old harbour area around the historic crane and the Stintmarkt forms a small waterfront. The Leuphana University campus lies further south.
A Lüneburg map poster emphasises this medieval density. The streets of the old town form an irregular, closely packed web, the Ilmenau runs along its eastern side, and newer districts spread out in more open patterns. Because centuries of salt mining caused subsidence in part of the town, even the ground has a story here, although the map shows only the calm surface.
This long, wide square is lined with brick gabled houses and closed at one end by St. John's Church. On the map it appears as a distinct open rectangle in the dense core.
The historic crane and the Stintmarkt sit on the Ilmenau, where salt was once loaded. The river's line and the old quay mark the eastern edge of the old town.
Short, crooked lanes connect the squares, churches and former salt works. Together they form a finely detailed, irregular pattern very different from the planned districts around them.

Por qué Lüneburg
Lüneburg is a university town, a Hanseatic town and for many people simply a beautiful place to have lived. A map of its old town, squares and river is a fitting gift for Leuphana graduates, newcomers who have settled in, or anyone who loves brick Gothic cities.
Change the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps to mark a move or a graduation, and choose one of five styles. Paper and Sand suit an old Hanseatic town well. HD files for six sizes cost $9, and printed posters with an optional frame are also available.
