Maaseik lies in the province of Limburg in northeastern Belgium, on the western bank of the Meuse, which here forms the border with the Netherlands. On a map the historic centre is compact and slightly oval, with streets converging on the large Markt, and the line of the former fortifications still traceable in the ring of roads around it.
The Markt is lined with lime trees and old facades, and it holds a statue of Jan and Hubert van Eyck, the painters traditionally said to have been born in or near Maaseik. The town sits between the river and the heathland and woods of the Kempen plateau, now partly protected as the Hoge Kempen National Park, and the Meuse's gravel lakes lie close by.

The Meuse curves broadly along the eastern edge, marking both a natural and a national boundary.
