El mapa
Mühlhausen, in northwestern Thuringia, was a free imperial city in the Middle Ages, and the map still shows it. The old town forms a compact, rounded shape. Much of its medieval wall survives, with towers and gates. Inside, the lanes twist and branch in no fixed pattern, and a ring of wider roads outside marks where fortifications once stood.
The town is known for its many church towers, and two of them dominate the history books. Johann Sebastian Bach served as organist at Divi Blasii in 1707 and 1708. Nearly two centuries earlier, the radical preacher Thomas Müntzer made Mühlhausen a centre of the Peasants' War of 1525. The Marienkirche, one of Thuringia's largest churches, rises nearby.
A Mühlhausen map poster shows a medieval plan at a glance: the enclosed core, the tight web of streets and the more open suburbs that grew beyond the walls in later centuries. The Unstrut runs along the edge of town and adds a single soft curve against the dense grain of the centre.
The line of the medieval town wall, much of it still standing, wraps the historic centre in a clear rounded outline that defines the whole composition.
Irregular streets open into small squares around the town's many churches, including the Marienkirche and Divi Blasii, where Bach once played the organ.
The Unstrut river passes along the town's edge. Its gentle curve contrasts with the tight medieval streets and the broader roads of the later suburbs.
