Nijlen is a municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp, made up of three centres: Nijlen itself, Kessel and Bevel. Seen from above, it is not one town but a small constellation. Each village has its own compact core around a church, and ribbons of houses stretch along the roads that link them. Between these ribbons lie fields, woodland and meadow.
The landscape belongs to the Kempen, the sandy region of northern Belgium, and the map shows it clearly. Straight rural roads meet at shallow angles, patches of forest break up the farmland, and the valley of the Kleine Nete runs along the area as a gentle corridor of green. The railway between Antwerp and Herentals crosses the municipality, with stops in Kessel and Nijlen.
