El mapa
Nijmegen is regarded as the oldest city in the Netherlands, with origins in a Roman settlement on high ground beside the Waal nearly two thousand years ago. On a map the old centre sits on the southern bank, tightly packed on a slope above the water, while the river itself sweeps in a broad curve across the top of the frame.
Bridges dominate the riverfront. The Waalbrug, completed in 1936, was fought over during Operation Market Garden in 1944, and the newer De Oversteek, opened in 2013, is named after the river crossing made by American troops during that battle. A flood-protection project dug a secondary channel, the Spiegelwaal, on the north bank, creating a long island opposite the old town.
South and east of the centre the land rises into wooded hills, unusual in the Netherlands, and Radboud University spreads across green grounds. Each July the city hosts the Four Days Marches, a walking event that draws tens of thousands of participants. A Nijmegen map poster brings together river, bridges, old town and hills in a single composition.
The broadest branch of the Rhine delta sweeps past the city in a wide curve, a strong, heavy line along the northern edge of the map.
The Waalbrug, De Oversteek and the railway bridge cross the river, while the Spiegelwaal side channel carves out a long island facing the old town.
Toward the southeast the land rises into wooded ridges, where streets begin to curve and wind in a way rarely seen on maps of Dutch cities.
