Northport lies on the north bank of the Black Warrior River, directly across from Tuscaloosa. On the map, the river is the defining feature. It is a wide band that curves between the two cities, crossed by a few bridges that tie Northport's streets to the larger city on the south bank.
The older part of town, near the river, has a modest downtown with a simple grid. Further north, the plan loosens into winding residential roads, cul-de-sacs and wooded lots. They follow the gentle hills and creeks of west Alabama. Highways run out towards the countryside and give the map its longer lines.
Northport is known for the Kentuck Festival of the Arts, an annual celebration of folk and contemporary art that draws visitors from across the South.
