Petroşani lies in Hunedoara County in south-western Romania, in the Jiu Valley, a deep basin enclosed by the Parâng, Retezat and Vâlcan mountains of the Southern Carpathians. The map shows a town stretched along the valley floor, with the East Jiu River running through it and streets climbing the lower slopes wherever the terrain allows.
For more than a century Petroşani has been the centre of Romania's main hard-coal basin, and the Jiu Valley miners played a notable part in the country's modern history, from the strike of 1977 to the miners' marches on Bucharest in the 1990s. The town's university grew out of mining education and still specialises in mining and engineering.

Former mine sites, rail sidings and workers' housing districts are all visible in the street pattern, a legacy of the coal industry that shaped the town's growth.
