Picheng lies in the north of Jiangsu province, on the wide, low plain in the region around Xuzhou. The ground here is almost entirely level. From above, the landscape is ordered by straight roads, drainage channels and field boundaries that divide the countryside into regular blocks. The town is a compact cluster of streets where these routes meet.
Northern Jiangsu has been farmed and settled for a very long time, and its water network has been reshaped over the centuries by canals and river works. That long history of managing water shows in the landscape. The Picheng map poster brings out that geometry, setting the town in a lattice of lines.
In black and white, the flatness of the plain becomes an advantage. With no hills to bend the roads, the map turns into a clean arrangement of straight strokes and a denser core of streets at the centre.
