Ridgecrest lies in the Indian Wells Valley at the northern edge of the Mojave Desert in Kern County. Seen from above, it is a clean grid of streets laid over open desert, with the town ending sharply where development gives way to scrub, dry washes and bare ground.
The town grew alongside Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, which borders it to the north and east and covers a huge area of desert. The Sierra Nevada rises to the west, and in 2019 the region drew national attention when a sequence of strong earthquakes, including a magnitude 7.1 event, struck nearby.
