El mapa

Shibata Map Poster & Print

Shibata lies on the northern Echigo plain in Niigata Prefecture, a landscape of rice fields and rivers running toward the Sea of Japan. The city grew as the castle town of the Mizoguchi clan, and on the map the old core still gathers around the castle site, with a grid of streets that reflects its Edo-period plan.

Shibata Castle's reconstructed turrets, including a rare three-ridged roof, stand within the grounds of a Self-Defense Force base, with part of the moat still visible. Around the centre, neighbourhoods spread across flat land, and beyond them the rice paddies form a wide, geometric landscape reaching to the foothills.

A Shibata map poster captures this layering of history and agriculture. The castle area, the old town streets and the regular fields around them make an orderly, calm composition. To the east, the hot spring town of Tsukioka adds a small cluster of streets near the mountains.

01

Castle grounds

The site of Shibata Castle, with its moat and reconstructed turrets, anchors the centre of the map and shows the city's origins as a feudal castle town.

02

Old town grid

Streets around the castle keep the orderly pattern of the Edo period, a clear rectangular layout that contrasts with the looser newer suburbs.

03

Echigo rice fields

The paddies surrounding the city form a precise grid of fields and canals, a landscape shaped by centuries of rice farming on the plain.
