Shizhai lies in the far north of Jiangsu, on the broad lowland that runs toward the borders of Shandong, Henan and Anhui. From above the ground is almost perfectly level. With no hills or coastline to bend it, the town takes its shape from roads, drainage channels and the edges of cultivated land. Straight lines dominate, and the town's outline is set by where the farmland stops.
At street scale the centre reads as a tight cluster of blocks around a few through roads, with lighter, more scattered building beyond them. Farther out, small villages sit like islands in a sea of fields, each joined to the next by a narrow lane. Printed in black and white, this pattern of cluster, lane and field turns into a quiet, even texture.
