Spenge lies in the Herford district of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the gently rolling Ravensberger Land between Bielefeld and the Lower Saxony border. The map shows a town without a single dense core. The main centre has several villages and farmsteads spread around it, connected by lanes that wind through fields and small woods.
That dispersed pattern is typical of the region, where farms were traditionally scattered rather than grouped into tight villages. Streams run through shallow valleys, and residential streets have gradually filled the spaces between older settlements.
