Târgu Jiu is the seat of Gorj County in southwestern Romania, on the banks of the Jiu River at the foot of the Southern Carpathians. From above, the town has a compact centre and a riverside park. One remarkable feature cuts straight through it: a long, straight line running east from the river.
That line is Constantin Brâncuși's sculptural ensemble, created in the 1930s as a memorial to those who died in the First World War. The Table of Silence and the Gate of the Kiss stand near the river. The route continues along the Avenue of Heroes to the Endless Column at the far end.
