El mapa
Uonuma lies in the mountains of southern Niigata, a city formed in 2004 by merging several towns and villages spread through the valleys. On a map, it is less one town than a string of settlements along the Uono River and its tributaries, each set among flat paddy fields, with steep forested ranges rising abruptly at the valley edges.
This is some of the snowiest inhabited land in Japan, and the area gives its name to Uonuma Koshihikari, one of the country's most prized rice varieties. Snowmelt feeds the paddies, and on paper the fields appear as a finely divided mosaic filling every flat surface between river, road and mountainside.
An Uonuma map poster suits people who know this quiet, mountainous part of Niigata, whether through family, winter trips or a taste for its rice. The contrast between the delicate paddy grid and the wide blank slopes gives the composition an unusually peaceful balance on the wall.
The river runs through the main valley and collects tributaries from the surrounding mountains, drawing a curving line through the centre of the map.
Small rectangular rice fields cover the valley floors, forming a fine, even grid that frames the villages and the roads running between them.
Forested slopes rise sharply around the valleys, leaving large quiet areas on the poster that make the settled land stand out.

Por qué Uonuma
The map suits anyone with roots in Uonuma, anyone who has spent a snowy winter there, and anyone who appreciates Japanese rural landscapes drawn with restraint. It is serene rather than dramatic, and it rewards a long look.
Personalise the title with the city or a family name, add a date in the subtitle, and choose one of five styles; Paper and Classic black & white suit the paddy pattern well. The $9 digital files carry no watermark.
