Ushitsu is the central district of Noto town in Ishikawa Prefecture, on the eastern side of the Noto Peninsula. From above, it is a compact coastal settlement. Streets pack onto the flat land between the shoreline and the low hills behind, and a sheltered harbour and waterfront shape the town's edge along Toyama Bay.
This inner coast of Noto is gentler than the rugged outer shore facing the open Sea of Japan. Nearby bays form deep, intricate inlets, and small fishing communities, rice fields and forested slopes alternate along the coast. On a map this produces a rich outline, with the sea cutting into the land in fingers and coves.
Fishing has long been central to life here. The area was badly affected by the earthquake of January 2024, and for many people a map of the town has become a way of holding on to familiar streets. An Ushitsu map poster shows the harbour, the hills and the shape of the bay just as they fit together.
