El mapa
Velenje lies in the Šalek Valley in northern Slovenia, and on a map it looks quite different from most Slovenian towns. Much of it was built after the Second World War as a planned town serving the coal mine, with wide streets, open green spaces and apartment blocks set in park-like surroundings rather than tight historic streets.
South and west of the centre, the map shows several lakes. These were formed by ground subsidence above the mine, and the largest, Velenje Lake, is now used for recreation. Above the town, Velenje Castle stands on a hill overlooking the valley, a reminder of the older settlement that came before the modern town.
A Velenje map poster shows the planned town and its unusual lakes in one clear composition. Velenje is also home to Gorenje, the appliance manufacturer, and from the 1980s until 1990 it carried the name Titovo Velenje. It remains one of the clearest examples of post-war urban planning in the region.
Lakes formed by subsidence lie near the town, with smooth, irregular shores that give the map its biggest open shapes.
The post-war centre is laid out with wide streets, generous squares and freestanding blocks, a spacious, geometric pattern on the map.
Velenje Castle sits on high ground above the valley, and the roads and paths winding up to it break from the regular layout below.

Por qué Velenje
Velenje suits people who like towns with a clear design idea. It is a planned place with a working history, and its lakes give the map an unexpected, calm quality.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint emphasises the plan, while Paper softens the lakes.
