El mapa
Wad Medani stands on the west bank of the Blue Nile, south-east of Khartoum, where the river curves across the flat clay plains of central Sudan. On a map, the Nile forms a broad, bending eastern edge. The city's streets spread west from the water in a mix of older, irregular quarters and straighter planned blocks.
The city is the capital of Al Jazirah state and the centre of the Gezira Scheme, one of the largest irrigation projects in the world. The British began it in the 1920s to grow cotton. Beyond the built-up area, a network of canals fed from the Sennar Dam upstream divides the land into long rectangles, which show from above as a precise lattice.
Wad Medani has long been a centre of education in Sudan, and the University of Gezira is based in the city. A Wad Medani map poster sets the curving river against the man-made geometry of the fields. Few other cities show that contrast between natural line and engineered pattern as clearly.
The river curves wide and slow along the eastern side of the city. Greenery lines its bank and stands out against the dry, flat plain beyond.
West of the city, a dense lattice of irrigation canals divides the farmland into long, regular plots. It is one of the most geometric farming landscapes in Africa.
A road bridge crosses the Blue Nile at Wad Medani. This single strong line links the city to the east bank and the roads beyond.
