Wenfeng lies in the northeastern part of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep ridges, deep valleys and rivers that eventually drain toward the Yangtze and the Three Gorges. The land is rugged and there is little flat ground, so the town has grown wherever the valley allows, and its outline follows the shape of the terrain.
On a map this makes for an unusual composition. The streets and buildings gather tightly along the valley bottom and the lower slopes, while the roads out of town twist through the mountains in long switchbacks.
