Angled railroad grid
The downtown streets are laid out along the railway instead of north–south. This gives the centre a slight tilt that stands out against the section-line roads of the surrounding farmland.

El mapa
Seen from above, Yakima sits where the Naches River joins the Yakima River, on the valley floor below the dry ridges of central Washington. The downtown grid runs at an angle to the compass because it follows the old railroad line. Around it, the regular suburban blocks give way to long rectangular farm parcels. The river runs along the city's eastern edge with Interstate 82 beside it.
The city started out as a railroad town. When the Northern Pacific laid out North Yakima in the 1880s, many buildings from the older settlement at what is now Union Gap were rolled over to the new townsite. That is why the core looks so orderly compared with the irregular farm roads around it. The valley is known today for apples and hops, and the field geometry shows it clearly.
A Yakima map poster picks up this mix of straight lines and water. The tight grid, the river corridor with its greenway, and the ridges closing the valley to the south all fit well within a print frame. In black and white, the orchard roads and irrigation lines turn into a quiet linear pattern that still reads as unmistakably agricultural.
The downtown streets are laid out along the railway instead of north–south. This gives the centre a slight tilt that stands out against the section-line roads of the surrounding farmland.
The Naches joins the Yakima at the city's northern edge. Their braided channels, gravel bars and ponds make a looser, organic shape along the eastern side of the map.
To the south, the river cuts through the ridges at Union Gap. This natural gateway frames the city and shows why roads, rail and water all bunch together there.

Por qué Yakima
People who grew up among the orchards, worked a harvest season, or moved away from the valley often want Yakima on the wall. The poster records the city's layout without any postcard gloss: a grid, two rivers and the ridge line on the horizon.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a family name or the year you arrived. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The digital HD files cost $9, or you can order a printed poster on matte paper, with an optional wooden frame.
