Zhen’an is a small town in the mountainous north-east of Chongqing municipality, in the wider region drained by the Yangtze and its tributaries. The terrain determines almost everything. Buildings and roads collect in the narrow valley floors, and the surrounding slopes rise sharply, so the settlement looks long and thin rather than round.
Roads enter and leave through valleys, sometimes following a stream and sometimes zigzagging up a hillside. Terraced fields cover the gentler slopes beyond the town. From above, the pattern is a tight ribbon of development with a fine web of rural tracks spreading into the hills.
