Zhuxi is a town in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep hills, deep valleys and small rivers feeding towards the Yangtze. On a map, the town's shape comes straight from the terrain. The built-up area follows the flat ground along a valley, with streets squeezed between the water and the rising slopes.
As in much of this part of Chongqing, level land is scarce. Buildings are closely packed, and roads bend with the contours. Terraced fields and scattered farmhouses climb the hillsides around the town, and narrow roads snake over the ridges to link it with neighbouring valleys.
