The map

About this Estcourt map poster

Estcourt lies in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, below the foothills of the Drakensberg, where the Bushmans River crosses rolling farmland. The town grew around a river crossing and a military post. Fort Durnford, a stone fort built in the 1870s, still stands and now houses a museum. The N3 between Durban and Johannesburg runs past the town.

On a map the river is the main feature, a winding line with the town's streets set out on both sides and bridges linking them. The older centre has a rectangular block pattern, and later suburbs spread across the surrounding slopes along more curving roads. The railway adds a firm, straight line of its own through the valley.

Estcourt also appears in a well-known episode of the Anglo-Boer War. In 1899 an armoured train set out from here and was ambushed nearby, and a young Winston Churchill, then a war correspondent, was captured. An Estcourt map poster shows the setting of that history today: a river town of bridges, blocks and hillside streets.

01

Bushmans River

The river winds through town and splits the street network into two halves. The bridges that cross it are some of the most readable details on the poster.

02

Central block grid

The older part of Estcourt keeps a regular pattern of rectangular blocks, which contrasts with the looser, curving streets of the outer suburbs.

03

Rail and highway

The railway and the nearby N3 form long, confident lines through the valley and place Estcourt on the main route between the coast and the interior.

Why Estcourt
