The map

About this Fangshan map poster

Fangshan is a district in the southwest of Beijing Municipality, stretching from the flat plain near the city into the mountains that form Beijing's western edge. The urban core around Liangxiang is a modern grid of wide roads and residential compounds, while further west the map breaks into valleys, winding mountain roads and scattered villages.

The district contains Zhoukoudian, the cave site where fossils of Peking Man were found in the 1920s, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Fangshan is also home to Yunju Temple, known for its large collection of Buddhist scriptures carved on stone tablets, and to the karst landscape of Shidu, with its river gorges and cliffs.

A Fangshan map poster centred on the urban area shows the geometry of Beijing's expansion: long straight avenues, large planned blocks, university campuses and a rail line toward the capital. The hills to the west are never far away, and the contrast between plain and mountain gives the district its character.

01

Liangxiang grid

The district's main town is built on a wide, regular grid, with large residential blocks and avenues that reflect recent planning on Beijing's outskirts.

02

University town

A cluster of university campuses on the edge of Liangxiang appears as a series of large, open blocks with internal paths and sports grounds.

03

Western Hills

West of the plain, mountain roads twist through valleys toward Zhoukoudian and Shidu, a sharp change from the straight lines of the new town.

Why Fangshan

A map that means something

Students who spent their university years in Liangxiang, families who moved to the district as Beijing grew, and anyone drawn to the Peking Man story can find meaning in this map. It shows a less familiar side of the capital.

Add a personal title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a graduation year. Choose one of five styles, including the technical-looking Blueprint and the dark Noir, and download 300 DPI files or order a printed poster.
