About this Frýdek-Místek map poster
Frýdek-Místek is two towns joined into one. Místek lies on the west bank of the Ostravice River and Frýdek on the east bank. The river once marked the border between Moravia and Silesia, and the two towns developed separately until they were merged in the twentieth century. On a map, the river runs through the middle, and bridges tie the two halves together.
Frýdek sits higher, with its castle overlooking the river. Místek has its own historic square, with arcaded houses. To the south, the land rises toward the Beskydy mountains, and the valley narrows as the river heads up into the hills. To the north, the city leads toward the industrial area around Ostrava.
