The map

About this Fukui-shi map poster

Fukui is the capital of Fukui Prefecture, on a broad plain near the Sea of Japan coast. At its centre the stone walls and moats of Fukui Castle survive, with the prefectural government offices standing inside them. On the map the heart of the city is marked by a clear square of water. The Asuwa River curves along the south of the centre, lined with cherry trees.

The city was heavily damaged by air raids in 1945 and then by a major earthquake in 1948, and its recovery earned it the nickname of phoenix city. The rebuilding shows on the map. Wide, straight avenues and a regular pattern of blocks surround the station, alongside fragments of older streets that survived.

Fukui Prefecture is known for its dinosaur fossils, and in 2024 the Hokuriku Shinkansen reached the city, linking it more directly to Tokyo. A Fukui-shi map poster captures the castle moat, the river and the rebuilt grid in one frame, with the rice fields of the plain around them. It is the outline of a city defined by recovery.

01

Castle moat

The moat of Fukui Castle forms a crisp square at the centre of the map. It encloses the government offices and makes the city easy to recognise.

02

Asuwa River

The river curves through the city south of the centre. Its line is softened by embankments and the parks that follow its banks.

03

Rebuilt avenues

Broad, straight roads laid out after the war and the 1948 earthquake cross the centre. They give the print a strong, orderly framework.
