The map
Galle sits on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, and its map centres on one distinctive shape: the fort. On a rocky promontory beside the harbour, bastioned ramparts enclose a small grid of streets, closed in by the sea on three sides. First fortified by the Portuguese and then extensively rebuilt by the Dutch in the seventeenth century, the fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Outside the walls, the modern town spreads inland from the bay in a looser pattern of roads, markets and the railway station. The international cricket stadium sits on the open ground just beyond the ramparts, between the fort and the new town. The harbour curves to the east, and the coastline continues in small bays toward the beaches of the south.
A Galle map poster works particularly well because the fort gives the composition a strong centre. The angular outline of the ramparts, the lighthouse point and the dense grid inside stand out against the white of the sea, while the town behind adds a finer texture.
Angular bastions trace the edge of the headland, enclosing the old town in a clear geometric outline that dominates the map.
Inside the fort, short straight streets form a small, regular grid, a colonial plan that has survived largely intact.
The natural harbour curves east of the fort, a sheltered stretch of water that made Galle an important port long before Colombo grew.
