The map
Gampengrejo lies on the fertile plain near Kediri in East Java, close to the Brantas River, the island's great river, which curves through the region. From above the district is a mix of village settlements strung along roads and wide stretches of irrigated farmland between them. There is no dense core; houses cluster along the main routes and thin out into the fields.
The Brantas is the defining feature of the landscape here, a broad dark band with sandbars and bends. Smaller irrigation channels branch off across the plain, dividing the land into rectangular plots. Roads towards Kediri and neighbouring districts form the main structure, with narrow lanes running off them into each village.
A Gampengrejo map poster shows a place shaped more by water and agriculture than by planning: roads following the river, fields filling the gaps, and villages growing into one another. For people from the district, or families who moved to the cities from here, it is a simple and honest portrait of home in the Kediri area.
East Java's main river passes near the district in wide bends. On the map it is the largest natural feature, framing the settled areas and the fields around them.
Houses line the main roads in long ribbons instead of forming blocks. From above, the settlement pattern reads as a network of lines rather than a single town.
Between the villages the land is divided by channels and field boundaries into regular plots, giving the poster a calm, gridded texture outside the built-up area.
