The map

About this Gampola map poster

Gampola sits in Sri Lanka's Central Province, south of Kandy, where the Mahaweli River winds through a valley in the central highlands. On a map the town looks narrow and stretched out. Its streets gather on the flatter ground by the water, and the hillsides above hold a looser scatter of lanes that follow the contours instead of cutting across them.

The town has a place in the island's history as a royal seat. In the fourteenth century Gampola served as a capital of Sri Lanka, before power moved elsewhere. The medieval city left no grid to trace, but the logic of its setting still shows: a river crossing, a sheltered valley and routes leading on into the hills from both sides.

A Gampola map poster is mostly about that meeting of river and relief. The Mahaweli makes a strong curving line through the composition. The main road and the railway run close beside it, and the finer strokes of side streets break off into the slopes. In black and white it has the feel of a sketch of the valley, uncluttered and easy to read.

01

The Mahaweli River

Sri Lanka's longest river curves through town, and this bend sets the orientation of the whole map, with streets and buildings gathered along its banks.

02

Valley-floor corridor

The main road and the railway squeeze into the same narrow strip of level ground, so the town's busiest lines run almost side by side.

03

Contour-following lanes

Away from the river, minor roads loop and switchback up the surrounding hills, which gives the edges of the map a softer, organic texture.
