The map
Gazojak lies in the north of Turkmenistan’s Lebap Province, close to the Amu Darya and the border with Uzbekistan. From above, the town is a compact, planned grid set in very open land. On one side is the desert and on the other the green belt of the river floodplain. Straight roads and a railway line lead out of town across terrain with very few other features.
The town grew during the Soviet period as an industrial and transport centre, and its regular layout reflects that planning. There are rectangular blocks, broad main streets and clearly separated districts. On a detailed map the cultivated land and irrigation channels near the river form a clear contrast with the empty desert.
A Gazojak map poster is an image of strong contrasts. It shows a precise street grid, long lines of road and rail, and a large expanse of empty space. In black and white it has an almost diagrammatic clarity. It gives the town the distinctive look of a settlement placed deliberately between the Karakum and Central Asia’s greatest river.

The great river of Central Asia flows nearby. Its floodplain, with fields and channels, creates a band of finer detail along one side of the region.
Beyond the town and its farmland the land opens into the Karakum. Only a few straight roads and the railway cross it, which leaves wide, quiet space on the map.
