General Acha sits in the south-east of La Pampa province, where Argentine farmland starts to give way to drier scrub. From above, the town is a regular grid of square blocks. Streets meet at right angles and run to the edge of town, where they turn into rural roads and fence lines. The level ground leaves the plan almost unbroken.
Founded in 1882 and named after General Mariano Acha, the town was the first capital of the National Territory of La Pampa Central, before the seat of government moved to Santa Rosa around the turn of the twentieth century. That early role explains a planned, orderly centre. A main square anchors the grid, and a few wider avenues cut through the repeating blocks.
