About this Germiston map poster
Germiston lies on the East Rand in Gauteng, now part of the City of Ekurhuleni. It was founded in the late nineteenth century after gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand, and its map still shows the marks of mining and railways. Rail lines converge on the town from several directions, forming one of the most important junctions in the country.
At the centre of the map sits Germiston Lake, a large body of water close to the town centre and a local landmark for recreation. The Rand Refinery, which refines a large share of the world's newly mined gold, is also located in the area. Around the town, mine dumps and industrial zones mix with residential suburbs and highways.
