The map

About this Ghoti Budrukh map poster

Ghoti Budrukh lies in the Igatpuri area of Nashik district, where the route from Mumbai climbs out of the Konkan and onto the Deccan plateau. On a map the town is long rather than round: its streets follow the highway and the railway line toward Nashik, with the older market lanes packed between them and newer housing spreading outward along side roads.

The name carries a small piece of Maharashtra's history. Villages that grew into two parts often took the suffixes Budruk and Khurd, meaning the larger and the smaller settlement, and Budrukh marks the larger one here. Around the town the Sahyadri hills fold the landscape, and the heavy monsoon of this stretch of the Ghats feeds rice fields across the surrounding taluka.

A Ghoti Budrukh map poster captures the tension between straight transport lines and the irregular ground around them. The highway and the rails run as twin strokes across the sheet, the knot of lanes sits between them, and the lighter countryside frames it all. Many travellers only pass through here, and the drawing treats it as a place worth stopping to look at.

01

Highway and rail

The highway and the railway toward Nashik run side by side through the town, giving the map two strong parallel lines that organise almost everything else around them.

02

Market lanes

Between the transport lines, the oldest part of Ghoti forms a dense cluster of short, irregular lanes, the trading centre for many of the surrounding villages.

03

Ghats terrain

Just beyond the built-up area the land rises into the Sahyadri hills, where roads bend to follow slopes and valleys instead of holding the straight line of the highway.
