The map

About this Gose map poster

Gose lies in the south-west of Nara Prefecture, where the flat Nara Basin meets the mountains that separate it from Osaka. Mount Kongō and Mount Katsuragi rise along the western side of the town, and from above, the map shows a clear line between the settled plain and forested slopes. Rice fields and small villages fill the space between.

The area is one of the oldest settled parts of Japan, linked in tradition to the ancient Kamo clan, and several old shrines stand at the foot of the mountains. The town centre includes Gose-machi, a historic merchant quarter with narrow streets and traditional houses that grew along an old road.

A Gose map poster brings together these layers: the dense old town, scattered villages, farmland and the steep wooded ridges. The roads leading into the mountains, including the approach to the Katsuragi ropeway, add winding lines to the western edge. The result is balanced, with open space and detail in equal measure.

01

Kongō and Katsuragi ridge

The long mountain ridge on the western side forms a wide, dark band of forest, sharply bordering the flat, cultivated land of the basin.

02

Gose-machi old quarter

The historic merchant district preserves narrow streets and closely packed traditional houses, creating a tight, fine-grained pattern in the town centre.

03

Basin farmland

Rice fields and small villages spread across the flat land east of the mountains, giving the map a scattered texture of settlements and field boundaries.
