The map

About this Gostivar map poster

Gostivar lies in north-western North Macedonia, at the southern end of the Polog valley, a long flat plain enclosed by mountains. The Šar range rises to the north-west, and the slopes of Bistra and Suva Gora close in to the south and east, so on the map the town fills the valley floor while ridges gather around its edges.

Just south-west of town, near the village of Vrutok, springs give rise to the Vardar, the country's longest river, which flows north-east through the Polog plain before turning toward Skopje and the Aegean. On a detailed map the young river and its tributaries weave across the fields beside the main road to Tetovo and the capital.

The centre gathers around an Ottoman-era core with an eighteenth-century clock tower and a mosque beside it, surrounded by newer blocks and suburbs spreading into the plain. Albanian and Macedonian are both heard in daily life. A Gostivar map poster brings together the dense centre, the river's first stretch and the mountains framing the valley.

Polog valley

The flat valley floor stretches north-east toward Tetovo, opening the composition in that direction while mountains close it in on the other sides.

Why Gostivar

A map that means something

For the many people from Gostivar who live abroad, a map of the home town often means more than a photograph: it shows the whole valley, the streets of childhood and the road out. It also suits hikers who pass through on the way to Mavrovo or the Šar Mountains.

The title can read Gostivar or Gostivari, with your own subtitle and coordinates line, and five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Printed posters ship from partners in more than 30 countries, or download the HD files for $9.
