The map

About this Grosseto map poster

Grosseto is the main town of the Tuscan Maremma, the coastal plain in the south of the region. Its historic centre is enclosed by Medici walls built in the late 16th century, and they survive complete. From above they form a clear hexagon with angular bastions at the corners, one of the most distinctive old-town outlines in Tuscany.

Outside the walls, the modern town spreads across flat land that was once marshy and malarial. It was drained and reclaimed over the centuries, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Ombrone river runs east of the town toward the sea, and the coast at Marina di Grosseto lies about 12 km to the west, beyond the pinewoods.

A Grosseto map poster puts that hexagon at the centre of the design. The walled core is small and sharply defined, the newer neighbourhoods fan out around it, and the long straight roads of the reclaimed plain lead away toward the sea. It is a map for anyone who knows the Maremma and wants its main town in a clean graphic form.

01

Hexagonal Medici walls

The complete six-sided walls with bastions enclose the historic centre, drawing a sharp, geometric outline in the middle of the map.

02

Ombrone river

The river curves east of the town toward the sea, adding a soft, winding line to an otherwise flat and regular plain.

03

Reclaimed plain

Straight roads and drainage channels cross the former marshland around Grosseto, extending the modern town's regular pattern to the edges of the poster.

Why Grosseto

A map that means something

The walled hexagon makes Grosseto one of the most graphic Tuscan maps, and it is often chosen by people who live in the Maremma or spent summers on its coast.

Put a family name, a wedding date or a holiday year in the title and subtitle, and edit the coordinates line. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Printed posters come on matte paper, with or without a wooden frame.
