The map
Gurlan lies in Xorazm Region in western Uzbekistan, within the Khorezm oasis, the irrigated land along the lower Amu Darya that has been farmed for thousands of years. Around it is flat, water-dependent country where everything is organised around canals drawn from the river.
From above, that system dominates the map. Straight and gently curving channels divide the land into long fields, village roads run along canal banks, and farmsteads line up beside the water. The town is a denser node in this network, where the main roads and larger canals meet and the fields give way to streets.
A Gurlan map poster shows how people make the desert productive. In monochrome, the canals and field strips form a fine, almost textile pattern around the compact town, a quiet image of a place defined by water.
Irrigation canals branching from the Amu Darya system shape the entire landscape, dividing it into fields and guiding where roads and houses go.
Long, narrow plots between canals create a regular striped pattern around the town, typical of the Khorezm oasis.
The built-up centre stands out as a denser cluster within the agricultural grid, where the district's main roads meet.

Why Gurlan
Khorezm families are closely tied to their land and villages. A Gurlan map keeps that landscape of canals and fields on the wall, for anyone who grew up there or who has left for Tashkent, Russia or beyond.
Add a family name, a year or coordinates, and choose one of five styles. Sand suits the oasis setting especially well. Digital files include six sizes at 300 DPI.
