The map

About this Hagåtña map poster

Hagåtña, long spelled Agana, is the capital of Guam and was the island's centre throughout the Spanish colonial period. It lies on the west coast along Agana Bay, and although its resident population is small, it remains the seat of government and the place where much of Guam's civic and religious life is concentrated.

The street plan is a tight grid laid over flat land between the shoreline and the ridge behind it, with Marine Corps Drive sweeping along the bay as the main arterial road. Low wetland opens out on the inland side, while roads climbing the hills behind town lead toward Fort Santa Agueda, the old Spanish lookout above the city.

At the centre stand the Plaza de España, with remnants of the former Governor's Palace, and the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica. A Hagåtña map poster frames that historic core with the bay's reef edge on one side and the island's rising ground on the other, a small capital shaped by more than three centuries of changing rule.

01

Plaza de España

The former colonial square sits in the heart of the grid, an open block among the streets that marks where the Spanish governors once ran the island.

02

Marine Corps Drive

The island's main coastal highway runs along the bay through town, a long, confident curve that anchors the composition and follows the line of the shore.

03

Agana Bay

The broad bay and its fringing reef form the seaward edge of the map, a sweep of water that gives the compact centre a calm, open horizon.
