About this Haiyang map poster
Haiyang is the seat of Xiuning County, in the Huangshan area of southern Anhui. This is hill country, with forested ridges and narrow valleys where rivers wind between terraced slopes. On a map the town appears as a concentrated cluster of streets beside the river. The surrounding land is marked by roads that follow the valleys rather than cutting across the hills.
Xiuning belongs to the old Huizhou cultural region, known for its merchants, scholars and distinctive whitewashed architecture. The county is also home to Qiyun Mountain, one of the traditional sacred mountains of Taoism, which lies to the west of the town. The wider area has long been associated with learning, and the county is often described as a place that produced many top scholars in the imperial examinations.
