The map
Hardenberg lies in the east of Overijssel, close to the German border, where the Vecht River flows west across a flat landscape of farmland and heath. From above, the town is a compact core near the river, with newer neighbourhoods spreading out in curving streets. Straight canals and drainage ditches divide the surrounding countryside into long, regular parcels.
The municipality covers a wide rural area, and its many villages give the region a scattered, cellular pattern on the map. Hardenberg is one of the older settlements in the area and received town rights in the fourteenth century. The Vecht, with its restored meanders, remains the main natural feature, running through meadows on its way toward Zwolle.
A Hardenberg map poster shows a typically Dutch mix of order and water. The river loops through the frame, the canals draw fine straight lines across the fields, and the town's streets gather at the centre. It is a restrained, well-balanced composition that suits the calm character of the place.
The Vecht winds past the town in loops, some of them restored to their natural course. It is the most fluid line anywhere on the map.
Drainage canals and ditches divide the surrounding farmland into regular strips. They add a fine, geometric texture to the open landscape.
The old town forms a small, dense cluster near the river, and newer districts curve outward from it in looser, wider streets.
