The map
Haskovo lies in southern Bulgaria, where the Upper Thracian Plain begins to rise towards the foothills of the Eastern Rhodopes. From above, the centre is a compact web of streets with a central square and pedestrian area. Around it, residential districts of apartment blocks and houses spread outward. Wooded hills rise along the southern and western edges of the city.
On Yamacha hill above the city stands a large statue of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus, which has been recognised as one of the tallest of its kind. Haskovo is also home to the Eski Mosque, dating from the late fourteenth century and among the oldest in Bulgaria. The Haskovo map poster shows the city as a layered place, with old streets surrounded by later growth.
On a monochrome print, the contrast between the dense centre and the open hills makes a clear composition. Roads leave the city in several directions towards the plain and the border regions to the south. The green slopes remain as calm spaces at the edges of the frame.
The hill above the city holds the monumental Virgin Mary statue. It forms an open, raised space next to the built-up districts on the map.
The central square and the streets around the Eski Mosque make up the oldest part of Haskovo. They form the tightest, most irregular pattern.
The ground rises towards the Eastern Rhodopes. Roads curve as they climb out of the city, softening the edges of the print.
