The map
Hattiesburg grew where railroads crossed in the pine forests of south Mississippi. That origin still shapes the map. A compact older downtown sits near the rail lines, and later neighbourhoods and commercial strips extend westward along the main highways. To the east and south, the Leaf River and Bouie River bring wide, green bottomlands that the streets largely avoid.
The city was founded in the 1880s by William H. Hardy, who named it after his wife, Hattie. Its role as a meeting point of rail lines earned it the nickname the Hub City. Today the University of Southern Mississippi is a major presence, with a large campus of quads, athletic facilities and tree-lined walks west of downtown.
A Hattiesburg map poster places the older street grid next to the looser suburban growth and the open river floodplains, which gives the design a clear sense of direction. It is a southern town that has kept its railway bones while spreading outward over the last century.

The University of Southern Mississippi occupies a large, well-defined area of lawns, quads and sports grounds. It forms one of the most recognisable open shapes on the map.
The rivers curve along the eastern side of the city, surrounded by broad, lightly built floodplain. On the poster they appear as wide, calm spaces around the busier street network.

Why Hattiesburg
Hattiesburg means something to a lot of people passing through: Southern Miss students and alumni, families from the Pine Belt, and those who trained at nearby Camp Shelby. A map of the city is a lasting reminder of the years spent there, whether hung in a dorm room or a family home.
