About this Hattingen map poster
Hattingen lies on the southern bank of the Ruhr, where the river swings in wide curves through a green valley. On a map, the medieval old town forms a small, rounded knot of narrow lanes on rising ground above the river. Later districts spread out along the valley and up the surrounding hills, with woodland and fields filling the gaps between them.
The old town is known for its well-preserved half-timbered houses, and the ruins of the Isenburg castle stand on a wooded hill above the Ruhr. Hattingen also shows the industrial side of the region. The Henrichshütte ironworks, which closed in the 1980s, is now an industrial museum, and its blast furnace is still a landmark.
