The map
Hays is the largest city in north-western Kansas, set on the high plains beside Interstate 70. It began in 1867 alongside Fort Hays, a frontier army post, and the arrival of the Kansas Pacific railroad. Today it is home to Fort Hays State University and the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, known for fossils from the ancient inland sea that once covered Kansas.
The map is a lesson in prairie planning. Downtown sits in a tight rectangular grid aligned with the railroad, which crosses the city from east to west. Big Creek loops along the south side in soft meanders, a rare curve in an otherwise square landscape, and I-70 runs along the northern edge. The university campus spreads across the west side with its own network of paths.
A Hays map poster reads as clean and orderly, with the grid, the creek and the interstate each playing a distinct part. Around the city, section-line roads divide the farmland into squares, so even the edges carry the character of the plains. In black and white it becomes an unusually graphic portrait of a small Midwestern city.

Big Creek curves along the south side of the city. Its loops and wooded banks are the one soft line in a city of right angles.
Fort Hays State University fills a large campus on the west side, and the site of the original fort lies just to the south-west.
